What the test measures

Creatinine

A muscle waste product the kidneys filter out. It rises when kidney function drops.

BUN or urea

A waste product from the breakdown of protein.

eGFR

An estimate of how well the kidneys filter, worked out from creatinine plus your age and sex.

Included in this test

  • Blood Urea
  • Blood Urea Nitrogen (BUN)
  • Serum Creatinine
  • BUN/Creatinine Ratio
  • Uric Acid
  • Estimated Glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)

Who may need this test

  • Swelling, tiredness, itching, changes in urination, foamy or bloody urine, or muscle cramps
  • Diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, a family history of kidney disease, obesity, smoking or age over 50
  • You take medicines that affect the kidneys
  • Monitoring known kidney disease

A normal creatinine does not always rule out kidney disease, and an abnormal one usually needs follow-up. Kidney disease is usually confirmed by repeating tests. Passing much less urine, or swelling with breathlessness, needs urgent care.

  • Muscle mass, age, diet (especially meat), dehydration and intense exercise
